One Skein Triangle Scarf

One Skein Triangle Scarf

Happy Spring!

My attention span has been so short lately, maybe it’s the changing of the seasons? I just want an easy knit. A one skein project.

Here's a pretty little video on instagram of the scarf!

Well, here we have it. A basic scarf aimed to use up that precious 1 skein of (100 grams) fingering weight yarn you have on hand. It features a self- finishing tidy edge of stockinette stitch that isn’t fussy.

Bonus, it's really fun to roll these scarves up into little croissants.

Colors shown from left to right: Undertow, Odysseus, Mermaids Tears and Sea Horse

Measurements:

This is measuring the MCN Sock sample after blocking

Length: 57 1/2" (146 cm)

Width at widest / center: 12 3/4" (32.5 cm)

Materials

  • ~370 yards (338 meters) of fingering weight yarn.

We used Cape May Fiber MCN Sock in color Shoresy for the yellow / cream / pink scarf

We also used 1 skein of Merlinen (410 yards / 100 grams) in color Odysseus (bright aqua, green, fluoro lemon)

Choose a yarn that has a lot of beautiful, natural drape and is soft next to the skin.

Needle

  • US Size 6 (4 mm): straight or circular

Notions

  • 2 stitch markers
  • scissors
  • darning needle
  • scale, to weigh your skein while you work!

Gauge

22 sts, 34 rows = 4" (10 cm) in garter stitch (knit every row) after blocking or size needed to obtain gauge.

Abbreviations

  • CO= cast on
  • dec= decrease
  • inc = increase
  • k = knit
  • kf&b = knit into the front and back of a stitch (1 stitch increased)
  • m= marker
  • p = purl
  • rep = repeat
  • RS = right side
  • sm = slip marker
  • ssk = slip 1 stitch as if to knit, slip a second stitch as if to knit, knit these sts through the back loop (1 stitch decreased)
  • st = stitch
  • WS = wrong side

Notes

The scarf is shaped liked an isosceles triangle. It is knit from tip to tip, with increasing happening at one edge of the scarf for 1/2 the length. After reaching the 1/2 way point, you will then decrease for the other half of the scarf along the same edge.

A scale will help you figure out the halfway point of the project.

Begin

Cast on in your preferred method 9 sts. Place a marker before and after the center 3 sts.

Increase

Row 1 (WS): P3, sm, k to m, sm, p3.

Row 2 (RS): Knit all sts, sm when you reach them.

Row 3 (WS): Rep Row 1.

Row 4 (RS): K3, sm, kf&b, k to last 3 sts, sm, k3-- 1 st inc'd.

10 sts on needle.

Rep Rows 1-4 until you have used a little less than half your yarn. (50 grams / 1.75 ounces should remain) Use a scale to help you figure out your starting weight of your yarn, as sometimes it can vary!

For our scarf samples;

  • the MCN Sock sample ended up having 70 sts on the needle at the halfway point.
  • the Merlinen sample ended up having 74 sts on the needle at the halfway point. This is due to the fact that Merlinen has 40 more yards than the MCN Sock.

Decrease

Now you will begin decreasing.

Row 1 (WS): P3, sm, k to m, sm, p3.

Row 2 (RS): Knit all sts, sm when you reach them.

Row 3 (WS): Rep Row 1.

Row 4 (RS): K3, sm, ssk, k to m, sm, k3-- 1 st dec'd.

Rep Rows 1-4 until you have 9 sts remaining, end having worked Row 3. Bind off all sts on next row in knit, removing markers as you get to them.

Finishing

Wet block the scarf to measurements. Weave in all ends.
